FISH THE TOP END GIRLS’
The
Reel Women's Barra Classic, is a fishing competition just for the girls,
held in September on the Mary River System in Australia 's Northern Territory
. This was the third year this tournament has been held and it attracts
up to 350 female anglers each year.
Teams can choose to have one male member who can skipper the boat but
not fish, but many of the teams chose to go it alone.
This year, I was happy to be involved in this event as a skipper for
team, Fish The Top End Girls'.
Our
team members were Tamra Fittock & Annie Andrews from the Chamber
of Commerce and Jacqui Berrill from the Spectacular Jumping
Crocodile Cruise.
Day one was a great day out on the water with everyone very happy with
their efforts. Jacqui's aim of catching her first legal Barra was achieved
and Tamra landed her biggest Barra to date.
Back at the Bark Hut, the base
for this two day competition, the evening's festivities concluded with
the points from the day being tallied. We were
all very surprised that team Fish The Top End Girls' had finished equal
2nd, only 2 points off the leader. If not for a little slip up by yours
truly we would have been equal 1st, but we won't go into that.
Day two a noticeable change of attitude had hit our boat. Things were
more serious now that the girls knew there was a chance of winning this
event. The day started off at great pace with some nice point scoring
saratoga measured and released but the afternoon was a little quiet.
With a couple of teams having a great second day and leap frogging the
leaders from day one we managed to finish the comp a respectable 4th.
I have been advised that team Fish The Top End Girls' will be back next
year.
